Double face evidentials in German: Reportative ‘sollen’ and ‘wollen’ in embedded contexts

It is well known that the German modal verbs ‘sollen’ and ‘wollen’ have evidential (reportative) uses, illustrated in (1), but to date there is no satisfactory formal semantic account of these uses: Most existing accounts focus on unembedded occurrences of these verbs and derive incorrect predictions for the embedded cases. Based on corpus data and a survey study, it will be argued that ‘sollen...

Double Face Evidentials in German: Reportative ‘sollen’ and ‘wollen’ in Embedded Contexts

The evidential (reportative) uses of the German modals sollen ‘should’ and wollen ‘want’ are typically given a purely modal analysis that yields correct predictions for unembedded cases, but fails to account for many embedded occurrences. Based on a corpus and a questionnaire study it is argued that these modals can receive three distinct kinds of interpretation when they occur embedded in clau...

Evidentials and Epistemic Modal in Korean: Evidence from Their Intractions

She offers a modal analysis of this typologically interesting evidential. I argue here that this evidential category, though with some modal force, must be distinguished from an epistemic modal category of conject...

The role of evidentiality in Bulgarian children's reliability judgments.

Evidentials are grammatical source-of-knowledge markers. In two experiments, Bulgarian kindergarteners and third-graders (ages 6 and 9, N=96) had to decide which one of ...

The Semantics of Northern Ostyak Evidentials

This paper deals with the semantics of the Evidential marker in Northern Ostyak. As far as I know, the semantics of grammaticalized Evidentials has not been studied in detail for the (eastern) Uralic languages, although in the modal system of some of them the Evidential category plays an important role. I will analyze the different meanings of the Ostyak Evidentials, and suggest that the appare...
